Here at Collins Machine Works we believe that the youth are essential to changing our world for the better; therefore, inspiring and encouraging our children to become leaders and strive to make a difference in the world is one of the most important ways we can assist in the community. That’s why 7 years ago, CMW supported Sheriff Jim O’Sullivan in founding the STAR leadership program designed to give local children the tools they need to become leaders amongst their peers and communities. By supplying kids with these tools they are able to take a more active role in their education and lives, allowing them to inspire fellow classmates to do the same.
This year the STAR Leadership Camp brought together 72 kids, 8 junior leaders, and 24 team members and support staff to develop leadership and teambuilding skills through activities like horseback riding, rock climbing, archery, fishing and kickball. Run by Sheriff Jim O’Sullivan, his volunteer deputies and sponsored by Children Today Leaders Tomorrow, the camp provides structured activities and positive reinforcement for boys and girls ages 10-14 from all over the city of Chesapeake in order to unlock their potential and drive them toward greater success as leaders in their neighborhoods and communities. By bringing together kids from all walks of life and pairing them with mentors who genuinely care about their personal growth and development, the camp has helped create and inspire future leaders for 7 years now, training the youth who will decide the future.
Creating a better future for our children by arming them with the knowledge and skills they need to pave the way to a better future is an important part of giving back to the community, and is an essential part of the goals Collins Machine Works strives to exemplify. By exceeding expectations not only in our professional endeavors, but also our contribution to our local organizations we hope to create a better world for our clients and constituents both in the present and the future.
